Guernsey van hire – FAQ
Q: I only have a car licence, what van can I hire?
A: All our hire vans can be driven on a standard car licence. Yes this even includes the Lutons.
Q: Do you hire automatics?
A: No. We are sorry. All our vans are manual, which is the norm for commercial vehicles.
Q: Do you hire minibuses ?
A: No. All our vans are for goods, plus 3 passengers only in the front.
Q: Can I take the vans from Guernsey to Jersey, The UK or Europe?
A: Yes. There is a one off fee per trip and we must be notified at time of booking that the can is going off island. AA cover is provided for Guernsey and UK. European breakdown cover is not available through us.
Q: I want to hire a 7.5 ton luton (C1 Licence)
A: Sorry, but we only provide 3.5 ton vans which are drivable with a standard Car licence, the same size Rabeys used to hire. We are not aware of any company that offers box trucks this size for hire in Guernsey at this time. And no, Rabeys never did either.
Q: How much can a Luton hold?
A: They have a carrying capacity of 18cubic metres. The load area is 4m long, 2.1m wide and 2.2m high
They are 6.6m Long, 3.25m high and 2.1m wide. It has a tail lift that can lift 400KG
The van weighs 2 tons so can carry a load of 1.5tons (which must take into account the weight of the driver and passengers)
Q: I have a C1 or C HGV licence so I can carry more than 1.5 tons in a Luton?
A: No. Whilst your licence permits you to drive a heavier weight of goods vehicle, the Luton itself is rated for a gross vehicle weigh of 3.5tons. It must not exceed that.
Q: I’m moving off island, can I leave the van at a UK or Europe point?
A: No. We only operate in Guernsey. All vans must be collected from our yard and returned back to our yard.
Q: Do the vans have sat nav?
A: The Boxer L1H1 has Sat nav built in, the other vans come with a Garmin unit if requested on booking. There is no charge for the Garmin sat nav, but it is customers responsibility to ensure its returned safe and in good condition.
Q: Do you charge a different rate for weekends?
A: No. We charge the standard rate for each van as displayed on the vans for hire page, regardless of it being a weekday, weekend or bank holiday. There are no peak time/ off peak charges. Its just a simple daily rate.
Q: Can multiple drivers use the van?
A: Yes. Provided their driving license is presented on collection of the van, they meet the age criteria, and have no convictions, motoring or otherwise.
Q:Do I need to arrange insurance?
A: No. Our vans are insured with a dedicated specialist van rental policy, same as any you would expect any vehicle hire business to be.
Q: What if I only need a van for half a day?
A: We only hire by the day; collection is 7 days a week between 8am and 8.30am in the morning. For a one day hire it would be collection between 8am and 8.30am, return no later than 7am next day.
For a multi-day hire it would be collection between 8am and 8.30am on 1st day, for example a Friday, and return by 7am Monday would be a 3-day hire.
As the main area of the business is event work, we get the vans handed over to customers between 8am and 8.30am and then we are out ourselves doing event work. The warehouse is not permanently staffed. We do no need to be here for vehicle returns; you will be shown where to leave the van and drop the keys when we do the handover.
Q: I’ve sent a booking enquiry through the contact form or emailed and haven’t had a reply?
A: If you don’t receive a reply within one working day, please check your email spam folder before contacting us again.
Q: Can you provide labour to help me; move house/ move a piano/ deliver a load of furniture, when I hire a van?
A: No, sorry. We only provide vans, any labour needed is up to you.
Q: I need more information or have a question not covered here. What is the best way to contact you?
A: Please Email.
